Candid Portraits Versus Studio Portraits
I really don't like studio portraits. It's too formal and stiff. Look into the camera and smile. Where is the essence of the individual? They all look alike.
I have done studio portraits, but I always stayed away from look into the camera and smile. I don't like smiling portraits. I want to capture what is inside the individual and I accomplish that most of the time. Some subjects think they have to smile all the time.
Candid portraits are a favorite of mine, because I allow the subject to be involved in some activity that makes them forget I am there. That's when the best photographs of a person are made. I like to photograph people in their environment. I studied the work of Arnold Newman and Helmut Newton. They were great inspiration.
