Woodcut prints are as ancient as Egyptian and Babylonian history.
The Chinese and Koreans also produced them, but the Japanese perfected them. Woodcut prints declined in favor, but regained their popularity as "illuminations" in books, especially the Bible. Blockprints became a favorite of the Expressionist movement in the 1800s. Today there are printmakers that still keep the genre alive in both traditional and non-traditional mediums.
